🇮🇳 Indian Rummy

Indian Rummy is the most popular variant of rummy, played with 13 cards per player. The goal is to arrange all cards into valid sequences and sets before declaring.

Quick Facts:

  • Players: 2-12 players
  • Cards per player: 13 cards
  • Decks used: 2 standard decks + 4 jokers
  • Objective: Form 2+ sequences (1 pure) + sets
  • Winning: First to declare valid combinations

📋 Basic Rules

Game Setup:

  1. Each player is dealt 13 cards
  2. One card is placed face-up to start the discard pile
  3. Remaining cards form the draw pile (face-down)
  4. Players arrange cards in their hand

Turn Sequence:

  1. Draw: Take a card from draw pile or discard pile
  2. Arrange: Form sets and sequences
  3. Discard: Place one card on discard pile
  4. Next Turn: Play passes to next player

🃏 Valid Combinations

📊 Sets (Same Rank)

3 or 4 cards of the same rank but different suits

Examples:
• 7♠ 7♥ 7♦ (Pure Set)
• K♠ K♥ K♦ K♣ (Pure Set)
• 5♠ 5♥ Joker (Impure Set)

📈 Sequences (Same Suit)

3+ consecutive cards of the same suit

Examples:
• 4♠ 5♠ 6♠ (Pure Sequence)
• 9♥ 10♥ J♥ Q♥ (Pure Sequence)
• 3♦ Joker 5♦ (Impure Sequence)

⚠️ Declaration Requirements:

  • Must have at least 2 sequences (one must be pure)
  • Pure sequence = no jokers used
  • Impure sequence = jokers can be used
  • Remaining cards can be sets or sequences

🏆 Scoring System

Number Cards (2-10)

Face value points
2 = 2 points, 5 = 5 points, etc.

Face Cards

10 points each
Jack, Queen, King, Ace = 10 points

Jokers

0 points when melded
20 points penalty if unmelded

🎯 Game End & Elimination:

  • Winner: First to declare with valid combinations = 0 points
  • Other players: Points = value of unmelded cards
  • Maximum per round: 80 points (configurable)
  • Elimination: 320+ total points (configurable)
  • Game end: Only one player remains

🥃 Gin Rummy

Gin Rummy is a fast-paced, 2-player card game focusing on pure skill without jokers. Players aim to form sets and runs while minimizing deadwood points.

Quick Facts:

  • Players: Exactly 2 players
  • Cards per player: 10 cards
  • Decks used: 1 standard deck (no jokers)
  • Objective: Form sets/runs, minimize deadwood
  • Winning: First to reach target score (100 points)

⚡ Gin Rummy Mechanics

Knocking

End the round when your deadwood ≤ 10 points

Knock Rules:
• Draw a card, discard face down
• Declare "knock" and show melds
• Opponent can lay off cards
• Score difference in deadwood

Going Gin

Meld all 10 cards (0 deadwood)

Gin Bonus:
• 25 point bonus + opponent's deadwood
• Opponent cannot lay off cards
• Immediate round victory
• Higher scoring potential

🎯 Key Differences from Indian Rummy:

  • No jokers - pure skill-based gameplay
  • 10 cards instead of 13
  • Deadwood concept - unmelded card values
  • Knocking system - end round strategically
  • Cumulative scoring - first to target wins

🏆 Gin Rummy Scoring

Card Values

  • Ace: 1 point
  • 2-10: Face value
  • J, Q, K: 10 points each
  • No jokers in Gin Rummy

Scoring Events

  • Gin: 25 + opponent's deadwood
  • Knock: Deadwood difference
  • Undercut: 10 + deadwood difference
  • Big Gin: 31 + opponent's deadwood

🎯 Game End:

  • Target Score: First to 100 points (configurable)
  • Game Bonus: 100 points for winning
  • Line Bonus: 20 points per hand won
  • Shutout Bonus: 100 extra if opponent has 0

🎯 500 Rummy

500 Rummy (also called Pinochle Rummy or Michigan Rummy) is a high-scoring variant where players earn points for melding cards and aim to reach 500 points first.

Quick Facts:

  • Players: 2-8 players (best with 4-6)
  • Cards per player: 7 cards
  • Decks used: 1 deck (2 decks for 6+ players, 3 decks for 10+ players)
  • Objective: Score points through melds
  • Winning: First to reach 500 points (configurable)

⚡ 500 Rummy Mechanics

Melding for Points

Score points immediately when melding

Meld Types:
• Sets: 3-4 same rank cards
• Runs: 3+ consecutive same suit
• Score = sum of card values
• Can add to existing melds

Discard Pile Draws

Can draw multiple cards from discard pile

Special Rule:
• Can take any card from discard pile
• Must take all cards above it
• Must immediately meld the target card
• Strategic pile management

Card Values

  • 2-10: Face value
  • J, Q, K: 10 points each
  • Jokers: 20 points (if used)

Scoring Rules

  • Melds: + sum of card values
  • Going out: + unmelded cards
  • Remaining cards: - from your score
  • Aces in runs: Count as 1 or 15

  • Round continues until someone goes out
